Remember
Stopping to smell the flowers and notice the trees is more than just noticing the beauty surrounding you. Stopping to smell the flowers and notice the trees is about giving thanks to the fellow energetic beings that live around you and honoring the connectedness of all life. What do the flowers have to say about the global events of late? What do the trees think of humanity’s current crises? The shared knowledge between the earth, the plants, and the animals is not a secret born out of exclusion by the earth, the plants and the animals but a secret created once humanity forgot the language of the earth, the plants and the animals. Just as human dialects and languages have gone missing because there has been no one left to teach the words or listen to the songs of their Elders, so too has humanity let the languages of the stones, the birds, the waters, and all the other living languages of our Mother Tongue to be forgotten.
Do not despair! Within each of us is the capacity to remember the languages of our natural landscape. Observe a small child and you will see that they know how to listen to the ground or speak to an animal. The small child has not been taught to forget their gifts of communication with the natural world. Slowly, the small child is taught to forget and by adulthood, most in our modern world do not remember.
But within each of us is the capacity to relearn. Within each of us is the capacity to remember how to communicate, how to listen, and how to speak. It is more challenging, of course, as an adult.
But it is not impossible! Within our DNA we have all the tools we need to remember. Just as science has proved that ancestral trauma may be stored within our genetic codes and passed down from generation to generation, so too are the neural pathways that will allow us to relearn, remember, and rejoice in our ancient ways of communication.
The first step is to remember how to communicate with yourself. However you practice this is perfect for you. And then, it’s a matter of shedding all of the layers of human history in your outer shell that is blinding you from your gifts. However you choose to do this is also perfect just for you.
And once you begin on your path of remembering, it’s like you become a child again, fresh and curious about what all life has to offer, about how all life forms have meaning, and asking the deep questions and listening deeply to what all life around you has to say. Just wait, there is a story within every ancient tree, rock and landscape.
You have the capacity to listen. You have the capacity to learn.
